The wine business is booming along with the economy. Craft beer, however, is exploding. So how is employment in these industries? The wine and beer industries now employ about the same number of people.
Wineries employ about 60,000 people. That's up from 38,000 ten years earlier. This is not seasonally adjusted as winery production crews get much larger during the grape harvest and processing season.
Breweries also employ about 60,000 people now. That's way up from 26,000 ten years ago.
Wholesalers, the middlemen/women between the producers and retailers employ 83,000 in the private sector for wine, beer, and liquor distribution. There are government employees, too.
There are others in related industries in the wine business such as vineyard workers and equipment makers. Hop growers, millers, etc. in the beer biz. Then there are thousands of retailers in the alcohol business. Also there are people in related industries. For example, Sonoma County employs 20,000 people in the tourism industry and that's mostly associated with wine.
BTW, while I was out there looking at the labor stats I found that there are 8,000 workers in the private sector for fishing, hunting, and trapping jobs.
These numbers from 2017. Source: Bureau of Labor Statistics
