Direct shipping is wine shipped from the producer to your home. Luckily, most states allow this now. A report on 2019 direct-to-consumer wine shipping from ShipCompliant shows us what this market looks like.
Despite a flat year in overall wine sales the shipping numbers are up. Most shipping is from California, as expected, as 90% of America's wine comes from CA. Napa dominates with $3 billion in wine shipments. Next door in Sonoma more wine by volume was shipped, but at much less value. The average price for a bottle shipped from Napa was $69.39. That's up 19% in the last five years and why the increases in Napa shipments by volume aren't nearly as large as other areas. Napa may have reached the limit of what people will spend on wine. The average price per bottle of all wine shipped is $40.70. Napa and Sonoma account for 56% of domestic wine shipped by volume and 68% by value.
Oregon leads the nation for the most wine ordered per-capita (congratulations Oregonians)! By total volume it's California then Texas, Washington, and New York.
Wineries under 5,000 cases (considered small wineries) accounted for over one-fourth of wine shipped. The wineries under 50,000 were responsible for almost three-quarters of all wine shipped. Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinot Noir account for almost a third of the wine shipped.
Most direct shipping is done while visiting wineries. If visitor numbers are down because of scares from wildfires and the corona virus the 2020 shipping numbers may be down.
