Invest in Wine Stocks?

I'm not any sort of expert investor, if there is such a thing, so I won't tell you whether you should pick up a few wine stocks. Maybe it's something you might want to do just for fun with a few hundred bucks. Here are some options.

  Crimson Wine Group CWGL

Headquartered in Napa, they own seven West Coast wineries, including Napa's Pine Ridge and Sonoma's Seghesio -- both highly regarded local wineries. The company began operating in 1991 and went public in 2013. They even offer wine discounts and other benefits to their shareholders.

  Duckhorn NAPA

Besides the Duckhorn Winery, established 1976, they own several others, including Decoy and Goldeneye. A few years ago the winery was bought by a private-equity firm. They went public this year. I own a few shares of Duckhorn.

  Scheid Vineyards SVIN

Al Scheid started in 1972 as a vineyard and selling grapes. Al wasn't a farmer, but a Harvard-trained businessman and knew about making money. They started their own winery later and went public way back in 1997.

  Vintage Wine Estates VWE

They are a small Sonoma County company, founded in 2007, that owns several local wineries. Their IPO was this year. Vintage Wine Estates started quite the buying spree with the end of the Great Recession, so maybe that's why they needed a cash infusion now.

  Willamette Valley Vineyards WVVI

They are the largest winery in Oregon and have three other labels besides the original Willamette Valley Vineyards that started in 1983 (a pretty long time ago by Oregon wine standards). Their IPO was this year, also.

There are large corporations in the wine biz that you can also invest in, such as Constellation Brands, Diageo, and Brown-Forman. IMO owning any of these wouldn't be as much fun as owning a piece of a winery.
