Wine Tasting in Sonoma County on Foot

Visitors often wonder about the best way to experience the wineries with worrying about getting a DUI. Some ways are having a DD, hire a driver at a significant expense, share tastings with your SO, and spitting. Perhaps a better way to enjoy a day of wine tasting is on foot. There are some places you can do that. It's called one-stop sipping.   :)

Healdsburg, population 11,000

There are about 30 winery tasting rooms near the downtown square. Some are laid back, such as LIOCO. Some are hip, like Marine Layer. Some are all about Pinot Noir, like Sidrui. A few are known for Zinfandel, like Pezzi King. One of my favorite Zin houses in Healdsburg is Seghesio, a 17-minute walk from the plaza per Google Maps. Portalupi is known for their Italian varietals and is a lot of fun.

There are plenty of excellent restaurants, including a half dozen taquerias. There is plenty of lodging available within walking distance of the town square. The entire downtown is maybe five blocks by three blocks so you won't tire yourself out.

Sonoma (the town of), population 11,000

There are a couple dozen tasting rooms right on Sonoma's plaza or within a block. There are at least 30 restaurants along with about eight lodging establishments on or near the plaza. There's also SIGH, a bubbles bar serving sparkling wines from all over the world.

Sonoma has a good bit of history in town, as it is home to the northernmost of California's missions.

Petaluma's downtown riverfront

Petaluma, population 58,000

This isn't a town people think of when visiting Sonoma's wineries. Petaluma is centrally located between the wineries in and around the town of Sonoma and the Russian River Valley. There are a few tasting rooms in the downtown area, enough to keep you occupied for a day. You'll find plenty of excellent restaurants downtown, and there's decent nightlife.
