Big Wine

Big Wine controls what wines you drink. This is especially true if you're buying off the retail shelf. Big Wine is comprised of 30 wine companies that control 90% of the U.S. market. The three largest control more than half.

The Big Three are Gallo, The Wine Group, and Constellation Brands. Gallo has about fifty different wine labels, The Wine Group about two dozen, and Constellation has almost a hundred.

The full list of wineries is available from Wine Business Monthly's February edition.
You can find out who owns what wine labels by going to their web sites. Some on the list are family-owned, such as Jackson and Korbel, but these are still large companies where the family isn't exactly hands-on, but are CEOs.

The best way to avoid Big Wine is to buy direct from your favorite small, family-owned wineries. Is there anything inherently wrong with the products from Big Wine? No, but you can decide if you want your money to go ...
