More than half of California farmers say they can't hire all of the temp farm workers they need. Most say the problem has gotten worse in the past two years. Many are switching to mechanization -- a huge upfront cost. Any way you look at it you can expect higher prices for fruits, nuts, veggies, and wine.
The EPA said Roundup (glyphosate) does not cause cancer and is not dangerous to humans if used as directed. The World Health Organization and others disagree.
The wine biz, and many others, love to talk about the magic Millennials and their spending habits. One recent study decided that actually Millennials are no farther in debt and spend money about the same way as previous generations and are not so special after all. Also, looking at Boomer vs Millennial screen time on their phones and computers shows pretty similar app usage with Facebook, Instagram, and texting being big time drains.
Data on tourism in Napa Valley shows that the flood of people and their money is not subsiding. During 2018 nearly four million visitors spent two billion dollars. The spending is up significantly probably because hotel, food, and wine are becoming more expensive. Besides California most domestic tourists came from Texas then NY. International tourism was topped by Canada and China.
On May 10th Netflix releases Amy Poehler's movie Wine Country filmed in Napa Valley, but based on a girls' trip she took a few years ago to Sonoma County. The film also stars Tina Fey and Maya Rudolph so you can imagine some of the embarrassing situations they will get into.
