With the Delta variant of Covid pushing through the country, locally in Sonoma/Napa, and the general Bay Area, there are some changes in place to stop the spread.
Some counties, including Sonoma and Mendocino, now require a mask for indoor public places. Napa is not yet on the list, but it's only a matter of time. Second, some bars, restaurants, and events are requiring proof of vaccination or a recent Covid test.
For Californians, there is a digital record of your vaccination. You can download a QR code that the establishment can scan (aka a vaccine passport).
The union for bar employees in San Francisco has made proof of vaccination or the Covid test a requirement to enter any drinking establishment in SF. Even though all staff members are vaccinated in the bars, employees are still contracting Covid and spreading it. Turns out the biggest ramp up in Covid cases is with the 21-40 crowd who aren't as likely to be vaccinated and tend to socialize with friends.
Several restaurants in the North Bay are requiring the same proof now. There's only a handful so far, but the list may grow. If you are visiting, you should check the website for any place you plan to dine for their policies. For instance, the popular La Toque in the town of Napa is one.
The Bottle Rock music festival coming Labor Day weekend (watch out for the traffic jams) will also require proof of vaccination or a negative test.
These establishments are on the forefront of this requirement and risk making some people angry, but they are more interested in keeping their employees safe. As one San Francisco bar owner said, "I don't ever want to have to close down again."
If you feel the need to scream at some poor employee about your rights because you can't get in, all I can say is, "Grow up."
