Not just for wine, but why do people shop online vs. in stores. Some of the reasons are obvious if you're an online shopper.
Convenience
Any time day or night. You don't have to get dressed. You don't have to go out in bad weather. You aren't wasting gas.
The only issue might be with poor websites. Some smaller wineries can't afford a modern, professionally designed and supported e-shop and might have issues. I've seen a few, though most updated during the lockdowns, as online was pretty much their sole source of income.
Time Savings
Especially important to busy households where there are kids and two working parents, or one parent households. The higher up the income, the more important this is.
Product comparisons
This is why Amazon is taking over the online world, though more people believe product comparisons are better in stores where you can touch and feel. There are a few things I've bought from Amazon that I would not have if I'd seen the item in person because of size, functionality, or quality that I couldn't determine in a picture on a computer screen.
If you want to check product quality when buying wine online, look for professional and consumer reviews. This is something that can be done in a wine shop, but is more difficult. I've actually stood in the beer aisle at the local market and looked up reviews. Must look kind of funny to others walking buy.
Enjoyment
Younger shoppers enjoy buying online. I suppose they've always done it that way. The wealthy say customer service is better in stores. I guess those of us that shop at Ross and Home Depot don't have the same experience as those shopping at Dior and Louis Vuitton.
Shopping online for wine is almost as much fun as getting the delivery!
