Will There Be a Cool AI Tool to Help You Choose a Wine?

Artificial Intelligence/AI is the current buzzword in the tech field. It can be used for good, it can be used for bad, according to the people writing about AI. How might this fit in with the wine consumer's biggest problem -- finding a bottle of wine on the retail store shelf.

Most wine consumers don't have a wine cellar, most don't belong to wine clubs, most have never visited Napa, most don't want to spend fifty bucks on a bottle. That is, most don't know enough to pick out a bottle from the hundreds or thousands on the shelves. Any fine wine merchant or sommelier knows that.

There are some questions to ask the customer to get them to the right place. What wines do you drink that you like? How much do you want to spend? What's the purpose of this wine -- dinner, happy hour, gift, etc? If it's for dinner then knowing what they will be eating helps, if you don't have that info you'll want to go towards a go with anything wine. If it's not with a meal, is it for the patio, a party, a wedding, or what? If it's a gift, what do you know about their preferences?  And there can be more questions, so you see the complications.

What if you could do something like enter a few wines that you've liked, a couple you didn't and why, assuming you can describe it, maybe your favorite varietals and wine regions, what you're having for dinner, and your price range. Then the app would spit out some good choices. Yes, they have to be good choices or you won't use the app again.

So it would seem like you could have a computer program to help. Maybe it's a smart program that learns as it goes (AI). Seems like a great place for AI because it's pretty complicated. Whether you work in a wine shop, a winery, or are a somm at a restaurant, you want a happy guest and a return customer.
