Dining Out is not as Popular as it Once Was

About 20% of U.S. wine is sold to restaurants generating at least 40% of sales in dollar value, because of restaurant mark-ups. There's bad news on that front as inflation eats into people's eating out habits.

Over a third of consumers say they now eat out less often than a year before they were surveyed. As you can see from the graph above, when they do dine out most are spending less money. The one item that matters to the wine is the 42% saying they skip drinks. I can't blame them for not ordering a $15 glass of wine. Heck, at lunch I often skip the soda and opt for the free water.

Fewer people are eating out and fewer of those people are ordering wine.
