Why Some Wine Trends Happen

We've had plenty of wine trends in the past. Recently we've seen blue wine, orange wine, CBD-infused wine, and natural wines. Some of these are still hanging on, but they never took off. We are due for a new wine trend and here's why.

In the post-Judgement of Paris days California wine became all the rage. By the early 1980s we had white zinfandel, Bartles and Jaymes coolers, and Glen Ellen $4 chardonnay. Why these trends? All the seriousness and prices of premium wines needed an alternative for a lot of people. In 1980 a Chateau Montelena chadronnay, a winner from the Judgement of Paris, sold for about $15!

The French Paradox implied red wine was healthy. Instead of caberent, many consumers went for the less excpensive and less tannic merlot, and sales soared. Eventually prices did, too. Supply-and-demand has a habit of doing that.

After the movie Sideways made pinot noir trendy, demand sent their prices upward. Then we got rosé.

Rosé from premium wineries is now $35 or thereabouts, so what new trend are we in for? We're due for something that's priced to be an everyday wine.
