Looking for Vegan Wine? Good Luck

Yes, people are quite picky about what they will eat. It might be because consuming a certain thing might actually be deadly or it might be a life choice.

So, is there such a thing as vegan wine? I'll tell you right away, no. But then, do you think every salad you've ever eaten is vegan? You mean a tiny insect has never snuck past the washing of the greens and down your throat? Packaged foods have no insect parts? LOL

There are a couple things with wine grapes. One is the MOG (material other than grapes) that comes in at harvest. There are insects on those sweet grapes, there are lots of yellow jackets and other insects hanging around the harvest. Wineries do try to separate that out, but it will never be 100%.

Large, industrial wineries that make those cheap wines?  Nope

The other is with fining the wine to clear it up before bottling. This can be done several different ways including with fish parts or egg whites or something else. This means if a wine is labeled as unfined you don't have to worry about this. But just because it's not labeled as unfined doesn't mean animal parts were used as there are vegan-friendly ways to do this.

Note that fining is different than filtering. Fining is introducing an agent to the wine that binds with what you wish to remove. Filtering is running the liquid through a porous element, as with a coffee filter.

If you want to worry about the fining process that's up to you, of course, but it will limit your choices on the store shelf.
