If you visit Sonoma County you may be spending time in its biggest city. Santa Rosa is a good central location plus has lots of lodging and dining choices. Here are a few hints from the locals.
Things we doEat breakfast at Hank's, Dierk's, or the Omelette Express. Eat breakfast, lunch or dinner at the Spinster Sisters. Dinner at La Gare, Spinster Sisters, SEA Thai, or Ca'Bianca.
Walk around Railroad Square checking out the shops and getting a bite to eat. You'll find La Gare, Omelette Express, Jackson's, Jack and Tony's, and Lococo's there plus several others.
Walk around downtown (across the US 101 freeway from Railroad Square). Check out Corrick's, the bookstores, and have lunch at Mac's Deli. Or if you're in the mood for a beer there's the Russian River Brewery. If that's too busy, as it often is, it's a couple blocks to Third Street Aleworks.
Go to Russian River Brewery for happy hour.
Check out one of the other eight or so breweries in the city.
Get a pizza and a beer or glass of wine at Jackson's Bar and Oven or Rosso Pizzeria.
Open a $45 bottle of wine to have with grilled burgers.
When dining out we pick the wine first then order food to go with it.
We take our own wine and pay the corkage fee. Or sometimes there's no fee, depending on the restaurant and day of the week.
Walk Spring Lake or Annadel Park on a nice day. Hike Hood Mountain or Taylor Mountains parks if you're up for a climb.
Walk the Luther Burbank Home and Gardens historical site on a spring or summer day.
Things we don't do
Go to Russian River Brewery on a Saturday or Sunday, and definitely never on a holiday weekend. Same with Lagunitas in Petaluma, too.
Drive north on US 101 between 3 pm and 6 pm on weekdays. Drive south on 101 before 9 am on weekdays (unless you have to get to work).
Park in the center of downtown where the city has jacked up the parking rates. Park a couple blocks away where it's cheaper or in one of the parking garages.
