There was this little thing in 2020 known as The Pandemic with one effect being a drastic drop of in-person sales, including wine sales, but a huge increase in online sales. The economy crashed, but people still bought wine. However, the most expensive wine, Cabernet Sauvignon, took a hit.
People still bought Cab and a lot of it as it's still the number one selling wine. Red blends and Pinot Noir are close behind with Chardonnay and Zinfandel a distant fourth and fifth in sales. But Cab sales fell plus the average price per bottle fell. Well, it fell to $62 which ain't exactly cheap. Cabernet's price drop was largely because of the decrease in Napa Cab sales.
In 2020 shipments of wines under $30 rose 42%; wines over $100 dropped 2%. Not a huge drop, but it hits Napa right in the wallet. The local folks will be watching closely to see if the drop continues or if this recovers as people get more secure in their jobs.
On another note, tequila sales are at an all-time high.
