Gallo's Thunderbird Wine; It's Ba-a-ack!

You may be old enough to have memories of Thunderbird. If you do they probably aren't fond ones. It was sweet, high alcohol and cheap. It was fortified to 20% alcohol and sold for a buck. This made it a favorite among the town drunks and got Gallo some bad PR. A few years ago it made the Top Five Bum List Wines.

Well, Gallo has seen the light and has "upscaled" Thunderbird. Okay, actually sales have dwindled over the past couple decades as the bums have probably switched to meth. There is now a Chardonnay, a Cabernet Sauvignon, and a red blend (cheap red blends are hot in the market right now). They will sell for under ten bucks. Not sure if it's aimed at the older set who remember the rot gut version or at the young'uns who may be lucky enough to never have encountered that "wine."

The old and the new
