This is my own non-scientific list of things people use to buy wine when in a retail store. It's in order of my guess for most to least important (but not insignificant) reason to pick a particular wine.

Less expensive grocery store wines
- Location on shelf.
- Price. Better if it's on sale.
- Eye-catching label. Either the color or design. Maybe it's got a cute dog.
- Shelf-talker and other marketing.
- Where the wine is from. Some stick with New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc or Argentinian Malbec.
- Screw cap. This might be a positive or a negative.
Premium wine shopping
- The winery. Small producers, reputation, scores. Winery vs. negociant.
- The wine growing region. Single vineyard wines. Estate vineyard.
- Back label info about the vineyard -- soil, climate, farming methods
- Price.
- Alcohol level.
- Shelf talker.
- Organic or biodynamic.
- Less packaging. That is, not too fancy of a label, foil or bottle.
