Post-Fire Sonoma: When Should You Visit?

After the horrendous fires and the news coverage it seemed like Sonoma County pretty much burnt to the ground. It is currently estimated about 170 square miles burned, or about ten percent of the county's land area. The most damaging was in the northern part of Santa Rosa. Most of the acreage burned were steep, remote hillsides where the fire could not be easily controlled.

That leaves 90% of the county untouched, including most of the wine areas. As it turns out vineyards make a pretty good fire block.

Of the main wine regions, Sonoma Valley shows the most damage as the fire crossed the main road running through the valley floor, Highway 12, in a couple spots. It's estimated over 25% of Sonoma Valley burned. Dry Creek Valley is okay, the valley floor in Alexander Valley is fine, as is Russian River Valley away from Santa Rosa.

Services have been restored to the busier areas, main roads are open, and most businesses are up-and-running (and eager for guests). The air is pretty clean now with only the occasional smell of smoke.

So is it time to venture out to Sonoma County tasting rooms? If you're planning a trip for November or December of this year I would say you'll be fine. You will most likely see some of the devastation. You will definitely see some of the burned hillsides. There is heavier than normal traffic on the main roads, I suppose because some of the secondary ones are still closed.

If you are planning a trip for a few months out then I would certainly say go ahead and visit. I can't think of any reason not to. We'll certainly be happy to see you!
