2020 saw the largest area burnt in California in one year plus five of the top seven fires occurred in 2020. Disruptions from the fires and wildfire smoke caused some of the worst problems ever for the local wine industry. The wines from that year are often found for sale now so this is a good time to revisit the issues that grape and wine production workers went through that year.
Glass Fire started in Napa Valley late September 2020 right at the height of the grape harvest season |
The following graphs are winery surveys from CaliforniaAgriculture.org.
The first one A) Region shows the severity of wildfire-related problems by area. Sonoma & Napa are in the North Coast, the hardest hit as you can see from the graph.
The B) Impact Type graph shows what problems occurred. As you can see it was a lot more than smoke taint as there were reasons things could not get done on time because of power outages, road closures, etc. My son and his wife worked at a winery in northern Sonoma Valley for the 2020 harvest. For a few days a police escort into the area was required for essential workers.
