Sunset Magazine named Paso Robles, in Central California's San Luis Obispo County, as the top wine country town for 2016. The award was for its combination of lodging, food, and wine. Paso has a laid-back atmosphere and located about 3-1/2 hours from both Los Angeles and San Francisco.
Wine Enthusiast Magazine named Paso Robles as their wine region of the year in 2013.
The area first became known for Zinfandel. Cabernet Sauvignon was planted later. Most recently many Rhone varieties have gone in led by Tablas Creek Vineyard. The region has about 200 wineries and is still growing.
Last time I visited the highlight may have been the Firestone Walker Brewery. Be sure to have lunch and take the tour there.
