It's still summer and it's still hot in most places and maybe you're tired as hell of rosé. Or like me you never got too excited by the rosé fad. What can you do?
Lighter whites
Chardonnay doesn't always make it in the hot weather and maybe you're bored with Chard, too. There are lots of other choices with Sauvignon Blanc being the main one as it's widely available. There's also Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc, Chenin Blanc, Gewurztraminer, Riesling, and sparkling wine.
Some of these might be a little sweet or even syrupy tasting and therefore not so great for summer. Also, keep an eye on alcohol levels. Lower is usually better for light drinking wines.
Most of these are higher acid wines and so they come across as refreshing. If high acid wines happen to be a problem for you try a Rhone-style wine like Viognier.
Slightly chilled reds
Yes, it's okay to put a light chill on your reds. This seem to work especially well with lighter reds like Pinot Noir or Grenache. By light chill I mean maybe a cellar temp, definitely not a full fridge temp. Too cold and you'll lose most of the flavors. Shoot for about 60-65 degrees.
Beer
Yeah, this is a wine blog, but if you've read this blog before you know I won't let this subject go without talking about the best hot weather beverage. There are so many great summer-weight beers out there from saisons to blondes to pilsners to pales to lighter IPAs. Plus wheat, kolsch, and sour beers.
My choices are sparkling wines and single-IPAs, but you should spend August finding what you like. It's a tough job, but...
