A survey of wine consumers shows the importance of different factors used to choose a bottle of wine. Here's a look at some differences between American and Italian buyers.
The top reason for both was that they had already tried the wine and liked it.

Second, third, fourth, and fifth biggest reasons, in order, for Americans:
- Recommendation from someone they trust
- Grape variety
- Price
- Brand
Second through fifth for Italians:
- Food pairing
- Country/region of origin
- Grape variety
- Recommendation from someone they trust
The one that stands out is with Italians picking a wine based on the meal. This could mean Americans don't understand or care so much about food/wine pairing, or it may mean they don't buy to have it with a meal. To Italians, a table with food, wine and family is everything.
