Beer vs. Wine, by Country

Some nations drink lots of beer, others lots of wine. Who has the biggest differential between the two adult beverages? This info is from a 2015 data gathering by the University of Adelaide.

The top countries where wine consumption greatly exceeds beer are Portugal, Croatia, France, and Italy. No real surprise there. Rounding out the top ten are Moldova, Switzerland, Denmark, Argentina, Greece, and Georgia. Maybe a couple surprises here. Before you look it up, Moldova is a small, landlocked ex-Soviet state between Ukraine and Romania and they have a wine industry. It seems like Denmark is more known for beer, but the locals prefer wine.

Beer in Spain? There's lots of it!
Beer heavily outweighs wine consumption in places you'd expect -- Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany, Austria, and Ireland. Belgium, Luxembourg, and Germany also consume as much wine as many of the nations in the top wine consumption list. So they just drink a lot.

The U.S. is a beer nation by about 3 to 1. Spain, a major wine-producer, drinks twice as much beer as wine.
