Wine Styles

Where do different wines fall in their styles? The picture below is an easy visualization of this. It's helpful when there are certain styles you like, and can help you pick out a dinner wine.

These are generalizations, of course, as there are exceptions to every rule. Plus, breaking them down into only four categories is a big generalization already. I'm also still trying to reconcile Petite Sirah being right next to Champagne!

Some descriptions (not all will fit every wine, these are examples):

Bold - Mouth-filling, rich, round, fruity

Light - Elegant, lean, tart, smooth, refined, citrus

Fruity - Overriding and obvious fruit, jammy, soft, round

Earthy - Savory, tannins, herbs, mushrooms, tobacco, dusty
