What If California Gets Too Hot for Some Wine Grapes?

If temperatures rise over the coming decades, some worry about wine grape production in California. Will famous places like Napa Valley get too hot for Cabernet? If you think just moving vineyards north is the answer, well, maybe it's not that simple.

The link below is to an article on heat trends in the Pacific Northwest. I'll summarize by saying the last couple of years have seen some incredible stretches of hot weather and some records set. No, two years of heat doesn't equal climate change, but there are plenty of other indicators as pointed out in the article.

If you still don't believe that the planet is heating up, I suspect any grape grower would argue the point with you. They are seeing the changes now.

Here's what June 2021 looked like

So how about going farther north in British Columbia? BC had its first bout with forest fires and smoke taint in wine 20 years ago. The 2021 heat dome that hit the Pacific Northwest also killed people in BC. In 2021 they had a record cold snap; the same year France had a record frost that killed off much of the grape crop. It seems climate change might not mean just more heat.
