The Demographic of Wine Reviewers

First of all let me say that I am an old white guy. That's the same demographic that gives points and gold medals to wines.

So as one gets older they do have more experience and maybe a deeper understanding of the wine world. This, of course, doesn't mean it should be dominated by males. But substitute wine reviewers with car reviewers for a minute. Would it be best if car reviews were all done by old white guys? Do you only want to hear about Mercedes and Buicks? Do you want to hear about immature styling of the Honda Civic? Because this is what you'd get. Ideally, you'd want your mix of reviewers to be the same as the mix of car buyers -- all ages, both sexes, all races.

Who are you more likely to trust? Depends who you are.

The obvious flaw I can see is with the old white guy wine reviewer being stuck on Cabernet and Chardonnay and not being a fan of new varieties or styles. Natural wine? "Why, in my day we didn't need no so-called natural wine." Things won't change much with old folks in charge. It's possible that things get more insidious with underlying sexism and racism in reviews.

There's this hoity-toity wine school called The Court of Master Sommeliers. Yeah, even the name makes you think of Old World snootiness. There have been recent claims of sexual harassment by multiple females towards several male members. Some have resigned, some are suspended, and they're still digging into the allegations.

This is just one more area of society that needs a redo.
