America's Favorite Wines

Polling and surveying company, YouGov, released data on American's wine habits. Following are a few highlights, some surprising.

Most American adults drink wine at least occasionally, 61%, while only 13% drink wine at least once a week. It's good to be special.  :)

Almost half prefer red and over one-third white. I'm not sure if the rest drink rosé or don't care.  The more a person drinks, the more they are likely to prefer red.

Cabernet Sauvignon, sparkling wines, and Pinot Noir are the most loved. Dessert wine and Merlot are the most disliked. Poor Merlot.

Syrah wasn't particularly well liked or hated because 43% said they'd never had it.

Almost 40% say they never drink wine. Of the 45 to 64 years old, almost half say they don't drink wine! What happened to those misguided people?

When buying wine, price is by far the biggest consideration. After that, brand, varietal, and alcohol percentage. The alcohol percentage as a deciding factor is interesting because it's something I've learned to use in selecting wines. Many California wines have moved in to a high alcohol territory, and I don't care for most wines of that style.

I'm still worried about the 45 to 64-year-olds.
